We can mainly categorize language schools in the United States into two groups. The first group of language schools are the independent schools that offer language education only. In other words the institution is not a department of a university or a college. On the other hand the second group of language schools are the ones that are operated as a part of a university or a college. Since there are more than 4500 higher education institutions in the US, international students can find a language school in almost every city. The primary question that international students ask is about the quality of the language education at those language schools. One should know that language learning is directly related to the person’s dedication and hard working rather than the school’s quality. There are international students who become proficient in English within a short time period whereas there are students who enroll at same language schools and can not be conformable even after attending language classes for years.

Financial Issues

Compared to undergraduate and graduate program tuitions, language schools’ costs are lower. The costs depends on the reputation and the location of the schools. The quality of the language education at different schools are not so significant. The success of the language education actually depends on the students dedication and handwork. Schools mostly offer monthly payment plans for each semester. In general, the language schools charge between 800USD and 1500USD monthly for English as a second language education. The tuitions for summer programs are more affordable with shorter periods.

Learning the Language

Primary question of language learners is simple: when I am going to start speaking like Americans? Language learners should know that after a certain age becoming a fluent speaker is a difficult task. Utilizing English well also depends on the personality of the student. An introverted personality would never be so comfortable with English even after taking several courses from best English instructors. Accordingly, educators can not give a time frame for students with respect to learning English. Lastly, having a strong language education background from the home country will be very helpful to complete language education step faster.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. On the other hand, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), is another most recognized international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. For undergraduate admission, US universities mostly (at least) require 72 / 120 on TOEFL and 5.5/ / 9.0 on IELTS. For graduate admissions the schools mostly require 78 / 120 on TOELF and 6.0 / 9.0 on IELTS. Please remember those are the minimum scores for application requirement, With respect to the school’s reputation the minimum score requirements may change.
